2. Introduction to Goal Setting

Goal setting is a cornerstone of personal and professional growth (Locke & Latham, 1990). When you set goals, you provide a clear roadmap, increasing motivation and the likelihood of success. A key distinction to make at the outset is the difference between dreams and goals:

  • Dreams: Aspirations or visions without structure, deadlines, or detailed action steps.
  • Goals: Clearly defined targets supported by timelines, measurable outcomes, and practical steps.

One of the most widely recognized frameworks for setting effective goals is the SMART framework:

  1. Specific – Clearly define what you want to achieve.
  2. Measurable – Include quantifiable indicators to track progress.
  3. Achievable – Ensure the goal is realistic given available resources and constraints.
  4. Relevant – Align with your broader life or professional objectives.
  5. Time-bound – Set a deadline or schedule to measure progress and completion.

When goals follow the SMART criteria, you transform broad ideas into actionable objectives. For example, a generic ambition such as “get healthier” could become “Exercise three times a week for 30 minutes, aiming to lose 10 kg in three months.”
